As you may or may not know, I certainly enjoy fly fishing and catching Yellowstone Cutthroat trout has never brought a frown to my face. Last year, my friend and I even set out to complete the Wyoming Cutt Slam. What a blast that was!
As such, I thought it important to help get the word out about the Yellowstone Lake Trout vs the native Yellowstone Cutthroat trout problem and share the current Yellowstone Lake Trout Suppression project that has been going on for several years.
This is certainly a “hot topic” and one that has been debated for a long time. Yet – no matter where you stand on the argument – I thought these videos were very informative and wanted to share them with you here today.
According to recent and ongoing studies, the Mackinaw or Lake Trout is indeed the main problem when it comes to the declining population of Native Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake. Can anything really be done? The data shared in these videos suggests a few directions that are being take and a few that are proposed.
Recently I attended and shot video of this excellent presentation put on by Wyoming Trout Unlimited YL Project Manager Dave Sweet.

This is a fascinating presentation. I shot and edited this video project for the DAWGs and put it on their website. Decided that 2 is better than one and am also making a post about this presentation here. (Plus it gave me a chance to fix up a few errors I had on the first set)

Lake Trout in Yellowstone Lake may have been introduced into the Park as far back as 1896. Dubois Anglers and Wildlife Group President Leon Sanderson stated: “After listening to Dave Sweet (Yellowstone Lake Special Project Manager, WY TU) give a presentation on the issue, I feel like there may be a glimmer of hope! Dubois Anglers and Wildlife Group (DAWGS) made a contribution to help purchase equipment for the research project.”
